In other words, hoping that children will yell \u201cpoop\u201d at smart home devices is a sound business model.<\/p>\n<div id=\"jiERPe1X\" class=\"ad-slot-wrapper ad__w300 ad__h250 ad__align\" data-builder-child=\"CuR2p4ju\">\n<div id=\"incontent1\" class=\"ad__slot ad__h250-inner\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-query-id=\"CP622Iba5v4CFXbxGAIdvCYPgw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21817035599\/futurism\/desktop\/content1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first artist profiled \u2014 Oregon music teacher Dan Helpish, who plays under the name Dandyland \u2014 told <i>BuzzFeed<\/i>\u2019s Katie Notopoulos that he was shocked to discover his song \u201cPoopy Stupid Butt\u201d had become a pandemic favorite.<\/p>\n<p>Helpish said that the song was written collaboratively between himself, his partner and music school co-runner Kristen Muir, and their special needs students when they prompted three students to come up with a phrase that had five syllables. One girl hollered \u201cpoopy stupid butt!\u201d and the rest was history as the kids began riffing off of the theme, with Helpish writing down their muses\u2019 every word.<\/p>\n<div class=\"relative h-0 overflow-hidden\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"transition-opacity duration-700 ease-in-out delay-75 absolute left-0 top-0 opacity-100\" title=\"Poopy Stupid Butt\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x273hYfUoM4?start=95&amp;feature=oembed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"lpJDQ0kd\" class=\"ad-slot-wrapper ad__w300 ad__h250 ad__align\" data-builder-child=\"CuR2p4ju\">\n<div id=\"incontent2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/main><\/div>\n<div id=\"lpJDQ0kd\" class=\"ad-slot-wrapper ad__w300 ad__h250 ad__align\" data-builder-child=\"CuR2p4ju\"><\/div>\n<p>The result was \u201cPoopy Stupid Butt,\u201d which Helpish uploaded to Amazon Music and subsequently forgot about until COVID-19 lockdowns began and kids were stuck at home alongside their parents and devices. The song that once garnered about $100 in streaming revenue per month suddenly began racking up plays, and ultimately the couple earned more than $10,000 in revenue from more than 10 million streams.<\/p>\n<p>As Notopoulos notes from \u201clived experience,\u201d children love to yell \u201cpoop\u201d at Alexa devices, and when they do, songs like \u201cPoopy Stupid Butt\u201d tend to play. Another Alexa favorite, she found, are those written by SEO expert musician Matt Farley, who has a bunch of goofy songs about poop under the stage names \u201cThe Toilet Bowl Cleaners\u201d and \u201cThe Odd Man Who Sings About Poop, Puke, and Pee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though <a class=\"underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/debugger.medium.com\/meet-the-man-making-tens-of-thousands-from-those-poop-songs-on-tiktok-6b1d0038141c\">Farley suggested in 2021<\/a> that his poop songs were hits due to kids having fun in their parents\u2019 Spotify accounts, he added in his interview with <i>BuzzFeed<\/i> that Amazon Music does account for his main streaming income, which lends credence to Notopoulos\u2019 theory. (Amazon didn\u2019t respond to <i>BuzzFeed<\/i>\u2019s request for comment.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"C6z4WpPn\" class=\"ad-slot-wrapper ad__w300 ad__h250 ad__align\" data-builder-child=\"CuR2p4ju\">\n<div id=\"incontent3\" class=\"ad__slot ad__h250-inner\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-query-id=\"CJLI-Ija5v4CFT3uGAIdLg4JGA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21817035599\/futurism\/desktop\/content3_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAmazon is at least 30% of my income, and the others go down from there,\u201d Farley told the reporter. \u201cIt\u2019s gotta be from Alexa.
